I am interested in getting an old postwar Lionel steamer repainted to original finish quality. Does anybody recommend a particular restoration specialist? I’ve seen a few names in CTT magazine but wasn’t sure without a recommendation.
Hi David,
I have only had one done myself, a 681 turbine. It was a real basket case. It was beat-up and most of the internals were gone. I had it completely restored by my local Lionel Service Station, Trains & Toys of Yesterday (formerly Townhouse). They are located in the Chicagoland area in Morton Grove, Illinois. Mike the Owner restores everything from the older tin to diecast. Their phone number is (847) 470-9500.
The restoration of a Lionel steamer is not particularly difficult (I believe CTT did an article some time back detailing it). Most Lionel Service Stations probably offer this service, even if they contract it out to a specialist. I would recommend asking to see examples of their work first and make sure you are clear as to what you do and do not want done.
Regards,
Tim P.
