Painting/weathering track

Quick question - I have found previous posts where people have used Railroad Tie Brown, Rail Brown or Rust to paint/weather track and ties. When this is done, have you carried the color throughout the entire layout - or has one color been used predominatly in yards with another feathered in used on the mainline? My thinking is that different environments may produce different colors in real life - or am I making a process too complicated? By the way, there are just shy of 16,000 posts on the topic of painting track so if this has been beaten to death at some point, please excuse my willingness to ask the question again. Thanks

I don’t have any specifics but I have seen photos where different colors have been used for sidings and mainlines. It would also be interesting to paint a stretch of mainline in a different color to mimic newly replaced rail.

Scrounge up as many prototype photos as you can. Colors vary from one era, railroad and region to the next.

I’ll usually apply the same base color to the track everywhere, then vary the weathering by location before ballasting. A mainline will have different coloration than a typical yard track, which will differ from the heavily used yard lead, which will differ from the industry spur into a cement plant. etc.
