Paints / Painting

What are the best types of paints to use for airbrushing and the best types for brush painting? Painting mostly buildings, etc.

Thanks

Daffron

LION just uses brushes, him owns no air brush, and really has never figured it out. Seems like too much work to keep it clean.

LION buys hobby paints from Walmart or from Hobby Lobby (far greater selection there). Just squeeze some out onto a scrap of paper or a plastic coffee lid, and brush them on. LION usually puts several shades of the same hue on the palette and scumbles them together as he paints.

For brick buildings, I usually use rattle can red spray primer. I also prime the insides, then apply the interior color. This helps prevent the dreaded “glowing building” when lit on the inside.

When airbrushing, I use Pollyscale railroad colors for locomotives, rolling stock, etc. For weathering or painting building interiors, I used thinned acrylics from the Wal-Mart craft section.

Daffron --this is like walking into a bar and asking, “what’s tne best car, Ford or Chevy?” You’re going to get a lot of opinions, some of them very strongly ststed, which probably won’t end up helping very much. So, you notice that the first two folks to reply simply tell you what they do and like? That’s the right answer. People who have read a lot of my posts know exactly what I’m going to say: the only person who can decide on “best” for you is you. You will have to try some different products and techniques. Maybe you’ll hit it on the first try, maybe you’ll go through half a dozen iterations before you find one you like. So, that said, I use acrylics exclusively, because several people in my house are sensitive to the solvents in traditional solvent-based varieties. As far as brands, I am happy with Testors Modelmaster Acryl line (incidentally, Pollyscale --suggested above – has been bought out by Rustoleum, the makers of Testors, and is being discontinued, much to the dismay of many here). I have tried cheaper craft psints, and have never bern able to get a decent job with them. For buildings, I mask the windows and paint the insides black to prevent light leakage.

I went to Walmart the other day and they had their Apple Barrel acrylics on sale for like .37 a bottle so naturally I loaded up not even thinking if they would work in my airbrush. Used some of it with a brush on a small building and the results were terrible. So I’m thinking now that the airbrush setup is probably overkill since there will be no mass production and my layout is relatively small so I guess the best thing to do is stick with the testors as you mention and the “spray cans”.

You referring to paints in the tube? What brand?

To whom do you ask. [click the “Quote” link to quote all or a selected part of the post you are replying to] LION buys them in those round plastic bottles. They last for years and years.

Lion – some of us are using tablets and the mobile site, which doesn’t have many of the options of the regular site (like quoting, inserting hyperlinks and images, etc). While you can go to the full website with your tablet, mine doesn’t play nice with the full site. [Edit – and you can’t edit posts on the mobile site either, so sometimes when you get on the desktop, you like to hop in and clean up your typos, like I just did.]
