Passenger Car Castings

Hi folks, I need help finding the manufacturer of resin cast car ends. I’m building the the “Blunt End” 10-6 sleeper for the Sunset Limited. HELP! please. Thanks

What scale do you want?

I am modeling the same train in HO using the Union Station Products sides. The only thing that I have found that will be useful for the blunt end 10-6 sleeper is the blunt end roof casting from Train Station Products. http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/732-504

Although it isn’t “just right”, it should be close enough for a start. I am going to build the remainder of the end using the seperate styrene passenger car fluting strips from Union Station Products. That stuff is fairly easy to work with. I haven’t gotten that far yet, but am looking forward to that little project.

Train Station Products also has the correct trucks for the Budd “Sunset Limited” cars, as well as all the appropriate underbody details.

Sorry 'bout that. H.O.

Thanks for the info on the side, know about the top piece, but, remember seeing something about the end being cast. Here is hoping

Not to say that the entire end casting ain’t out there, but I have done an exhaustive search for such a beastie, and have come up with nothing. Hopefully someone here will know of one. This issue has been one of the most difficult for me. I have been able to track everything else down, though.

I am hoping to get my Daylight PA/PB/PA set from PCM in early May (I ordered it last September). It should be a great looking train once I get everything together!!

Smitty, Hope all turns out well on the Alco, they should be great power for the train. I’m going to re “E-7’s” ABB P2K and they are on the shelf being detailed as we speak. Work in a LHS and one of the guys also remembers the casting so when I find it I will let you know. Happy railroading.

I was really split between E units or PAs, but at the museum I volunteered at in San Antonio, we got a buch of stuff from the SP offices in San Antonio when they tore them down, inluding a bunch of photos. One of the photos showed the #2 going through the washrack headed by ALCos. That was enough for me.

Who’s cars are you using to model your Sunset? I was happy to see that Union Station Products did all of the Budd cars for the Sunset.

If you need info on interior colors, I have a group of artist renderings for the interiors of most all the cars, and they appear to be accurate colorwise. Let me know, and I can e-mail them to you. I also found some great consist info that reflects different eras.

Also, I appreciate the offer to let me know if you can find the castings. That would really make life a lot easier for all of us. I considered trying to find the car in brass, but that has been impossible.

Edit: Here is a teaser. Impossible to find, though… http://www.thecoachyard.com/Pages/AllImages.lasso?RecId=400

Smitty,

Nice link! Those cars look beautiful. That’s basically the prototypical finish I’ve been getting with the Alclad product I’ve posted about.

Re: The artist renderings you refer to. Is there anyway you can post them on the forum?

Speaking of car ends, I would like to model an ACL Blunt End Observation car. I considered buyin a Model Power HO “Shorty” blunt end observation car, hacking off the blunt end and adapt it to a Walthers Budd car, however these Model Power cars are no longer produced and hard to find

They are on my home computer, so I will see what I can do tonight. They were some adverts for the Sunset.

Thanks Smitty,

Did you get a chance to do anymore metalizing?

I’m currently working on a project for my job. After completing it, I’m jumping right back into the metalizing bandwagon and am going to finish up those Metroliners and Rivorossi cars. I will definetly post the photos.

Naw, not yet. I am going to try it again with a fresh perspective with the Sunset Limited I am working on. I probably won’t be down to painting again for awhile. Right now I am concentrating on getting my new layout built. I need a place to run the buggers once painted!!

Sorry it took so long to reply, had to got to work. There was an unusual thing about Texas during those early days, if a train operated thru Texas it had to be on a Texas owned railroad. That appears to be the reason SP kept the T&NO a subsiduary for so long as well as the SSW. those two road only owned the Alco PA’s (12 or14) and powered the Sunset Limited thru Texas to and from New Orleans. The train picked up it’s E-unit power at El Paso and headed west. I saw the section of the train come thru Phoenix, and hence E-7 & 8 for my section. Either power is correct for their region for some of the years especially the 50’s to the early 60’s. I’ll use a combo of cars some from con-cor and of course some from Union Station Producs. I’ve seen that car before and it makes your mouth water if you’re in our predicament. I’ve tried alclad and used AntonioFP45’s advise before and he is correct the secret is in the primer that you use. I’ve had reasonalble success, but now I’m painting PFW white reefer and SP Locomotives and will get back to the alclad asap.

Thanks,

James

Being from Texas (and growing up near the Espee’s Sunset Route), I wanted to model the train as it appeared in Texas. That was another huge driving factor for going with the PAs.

I am trying to find floorplans for the cars. I know the floorplan for the 10-6 sleepers and diner, but need the rest. I have a pretty general idea for the floorplan for the coaches. I am not at all familiar with how the Jim Crow cars were set up, so that should be interesting. I would assume that they were the same as the other coaches, except a row of seats were removed for the partition?

Hey Smitty,

Yes that is an interesting car. It’s appointments were the same on both end of the car as far as decor and appointments. SP & Budd called them the divided chair cars and the seating arrangement was 32 seats in the larger section and 16 seat in the divided end. SP under estimated the ridership and on some trip the entire was set aside for is Black riders. I have all of the floor plan and they are contained in the Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society Book “The Sunset Limited” as usual over priced, but a great resource with all the floor plans and great pictures of the car sides an window and trucks. Great sectionon the disc bracks on most of the cars. Will help any way that I can with your project, let me know.

James

Thanks for the tip on the book. I will have to look into that. The Sunset Limited has a particularly ineresting history in my opinion. Talk about a rise and decline!!!

I definatley appreciate the offer for help. I ain’t too good to get help when I can.
