Passenger Service Between Regina and Saskatoon

Does anyone here know of the history of passenger service between Saskatoon and Regina? The only things I know is that it has been awhile since it’s been in operation. I knew someone who took a video of their trip, apparantly she was the only passenger for the entire trip.

This is turning into an interesting question. The Regina-Saskatoon situation is the opposite of the Calgary-Edmonton situation because CN had the shorter route by far.

As far as I can see on the CP Historical Association website, CP had already discontinued service between Regina and Saskatoon before 1960. I found a 1952 TT where they offered service via Colonsay in 7 hrs.

I’ve never looked at vintage CNR TT’s.

7 hours to go 161 miles, I wonder why there is no passenger service any more?

There were 4 daily steam powered passenger trains ( never diesel ) until 1957 when they were replaced by RDC’s ( Railiners on CN ) 2 daily round trips plus an express RDC with 2 RDC-4’s 6 days a week. The express Railiner was dropped after a few years.

In 1964 another daily round trip was added, making 6 trains a day. This was when CN was promoting passenger service and was very popular, even restricting pass holders on the supper time run.

I’m doing this just from memory, but in the 1970’s there was only 1 daily 1 car RDC left. This lasted until the Pepin cuts to VIA in 1981. The RDC was replaced by a conventional passenger train ( #109 & #110 ) from Winnipeg -Regina - Saskatoon. This was much slower than the RDC ( 3 hr 55 min ) When the Conservatives came to power they restore passenger service on CN mainline through Melville thus ending all service between Regina and Saskatoon in 1984.
