I have been looking, without success, for a source for Permascene. An e-mail sent to the address listed in Lou Sassi’s new book “Basic Scenery for Model Railroaders” bounced back as undeliverable. Any ideas as to where to locate Permascene or if there is an alternative to it for Lou’s recipe for “ground goop”?
There was an article in our 4th Division NMRA newsletter, written by then-editor Didrik Voss, that may be the answer.
Permascene is apparently a mix of vermiculite and dry powdered glue. Try this forumulation for a replacement for Lou Sassi’s “ground goop:”
1 cup Celluclay (from craft stores like Michael’s)
1 cup Vermiculite
1/2 to 2/3 cup white glue
1/3 to 1/2 cup earth-colored latex paint
1 capful of Lysol or similar disinfectant.
Get as finely ground package of Vermiculite as possible. I found some pretty good stuff at a Lowe’s big box store. The article suggested Lone Star or other bulk cement supply warehouse.
Hope this helps.

Scott,
Thanks, I will try the replacement mixture.
I will contact Standard Hobby, but I am going to try the suggested replacement mixture as well.
