posting trackplan

I used Abracadata 3D RR to make a trackplan yet I am having difficulty posting it.

Any help would pe appreciated.

See the plan at the bottom of the oage.

Thanks to Steinjr I was able to upload it.

What kind of file does the program put out? Is it a GIF, JPG, BMP, etc.? You might need to poke around the program a bit and see if you can do a “Save As” to a different file format if the program uses some “proprietary” format when it saves a plan.

You may be able to right-click on the plan and get a “Save” or “Save As” to come up, like you can with any graphic where the application doesn’t “intercept” the right-click and use it for its own purposes.

Thanks for a prompt response Mr. B, but I am having difficulty finding the type of file. Where would I look?

You may well have already checked this out but here is where you might look:

Usually the application will have a menu at the top; one of the selections will be File . Selecting that will produce a drop down and the selections will include Save or Save As. Save As opens a dialog box which allows you to name the file. Included in the dialog box will be a drop down labeled Save As Type. One of the types will be a graphics; i.e. .BMP or .GIF or .JPG or related type.

That’s how RTS works. Hopefully, your software will provide something similar.

I get 2 selections in the drop down;

The original file name, and ALL FILES(“.”)

Does the original name have a 3-character suffix, like jpg or bmp? If you’ve saved one of your own, you can use Windows Explorer to open that folder and look for the file.

Well I linked to my yahoo file and also added it to the post yard or no yard.

Hi, I assume that you mean that you want to Post the picture of your layout on The Trains.com Forum. I posted this freehand drawing of my layout, from a digital image that I had taken. You understand that you can only upload the picture from an acceptable Host. eg. I use Photobucket.com. Pictures will not be accepted from your PC source, eg, My Pictures. You then click on Edit in the Tool Bar and Click on Copy You then decide if you want to Post your own thread on Trains.com "Discussion… Or if you want to make it a Reply, to a given Thread, as I have done. You can type in your text message before or after the picture. Any Title that you want to insert must be followed by .jpg ,between the two center brackets Don’t forget the / mark Then go back to Edit and click on Paste. If you get a lot of unwanted “jibberish” above and below your picture, use the Backspace to delete all, but the desired picture. The picture will automatically resize itself, when you go to the bottom left and Post it. That’s all there is to it. You can always Edit anything that you have Posted. If you have any trouble, e-mail me.

HHPATH,I have downloaded plenty of photos but this is a plan made in a program. Its not a picture.

The drop dowm gives me no other options.

You might be able to “cheat” by using the All Files option.

  • Go to File → Save As
  • In the File Type box, choose All Files
  • Name the plan something like MyLayout.jpg or MyLayout.bmp
  • Try opening the MyLayout.jpg (or bmp), if Paint or Photoshop (or equivalent) opens it and it looks right, it worked as it should, and you can upload it to photobucket or wherever you prefer.
There might also be a File → Export option which will allow you to export as an image file.

Or maybe print to file?

No luck.

Are you by any chance using Microsoft Windows in any form ? If so, Alt+PrtScr will make a copy of the active window on your screen.

Start MS Paint (If you don’t find it on your menu, then click on start | select run, type mspaint and press ENTER).

Paste image into MS Paint (Ctrl+V is generally “Paste” in most windows applications - otherwise, try the “Edit” menu and look for “Paste”).

Click on “File | Save As” - save as gif or jpeg. Jpeg is generally smaller. Both gif and jpeg is widely supported by web browsers.

Upload to some web server on the internet - I assume you know how to do this.

Then use the image feature of this forum to link to the image on your web server.

Should be it. If you are using some other operating system, I am sure they also have a system for copying screen image to clipboard, so you can paste image into image processing program and save in GIF or JPG format.

You can also go find some freeware or shareware program which allows you to capture part of the screen image (I use something called ScreenPrint32 - it allows me to press a key combination to active the program, then use click and drag to select and area of the screen for capture before right clicking and chosing save image).

Hope this helps,
Stein R

Steinjr, YOU THE MAN!

Thanks.
