POSTWAR 1615 AND 2046 SETS

IF IT WOULD NOT BE IMPOSING…I have no printed reference material. My meager collection is 100% Postwar Lionel. As a fortunate 4 year old kid in 1954, my father began gifting to me Lionel, and he built my first layout. As a kid, I paid no attention to which came with what; and the original set boxes, if any, were trashed and/or discarded about 50+ years ago. I would like to be able to reassemble my few trains into original sets if indeed that was how they came. Then go about seeking repacements for freight or passenger cars MIA.

I would like to start with steamers.

I have a #1615 (1955-1957) 0-4-0 switcher, non smoker, with the 1615T lightweight (no whisle) sloped back tender. Postwarlionel says this engine/tender combo came in in work train sets or as a separate sale item. I have no boxes with this model, so I can’t tell through model number suffixes if it is a separate sale item or part of a work train set. Sorry.

I also have a 2046 3 window cab 4-6-4 Hudson from 1950-1951 with the 2046W streamlined tender. Postwarlionel says this loco came in boxed sets or as a separate sale item. The loco box is the standard tan corrugated variety and is marked 2046. The tender box is the standard Lionel orange “I will disintegrate as soon as you try to use me” variety marked 2046W.

If I get lucky, someone will jump in and tell me what freight sets had these engines and what the correct consist “consisted” of.

As always, I appreciate all of the knowledge and expertise you guys have shown me since joining this Forum 7 months ago. I sat on the floor near my two separate storage locations, bedroom closet and my basement, and started to handwrite an inventory list, including #, type of car, color, condition, and a notes section… "rides on air,

Jack,

I came up with these sets from the David Doyle Postwar Guide:

#1527 (1955) three car work train - 1615,1615T, 6462,6560 gray cab, 6119

#1549S (1956) three car work train - 1615, 1615T, 6262, 6560, 6119 orange

#1473WS (1950) four car freight - 2046, 2046W, 3464, 6465, 6520, 6357

#1475WS (1950) five car freight - 2046, 2046W, 3656, 3461X, 6472, 3469X, 6419

#1505WS (1953) four car freight - 2046, 2046W, 6464-1, 6462, 6415, 6357

#1507WS (1953) five car freight - 2046, 2046W, 3472, 6415, 6462, 6468, 6357

#1509WS (1953) five car freight - 2046, 2046W, 3520, 6456, 3469, 6460, 6419

Hope this helps (also hope I didn’t miss any).

Thanks, Rich! Needless to say, my handwritten list is not in # order, so now I’ve got to go to work. I’ll let you know if I get a set match between the consists and these two steamers. Looks like my engines were well beyond common offerings.
