Pounce Wheel size

Hello, according to your experience, what would be the best size (1/4"-7/16" etc…) pounce wheel to imitate spacing of nail holes on wood boards. I work in HO scale.

Thank you.

What scale are you working in?

Hello Jim, sorry I forgot to mention that I work in HO scale.

Thank you.

How does one apply nails to different size boards? Unless all your buildings have exactly the same sized boards I don’t understand how using one size fits all wheel can work?

Hello Bob, I understand what you mean, but I would like to know what would be the different sizes I need for different HO projects, there are so many sizes; I don’t want to have to buy them all.

I bought one at my LHS that is made by Trumpeter. The tool comes as a set, with three different wheels. I use the “C” wheel…unfortunately, I do not have a tooth count. However, it works pretty nice in HO scale. The majority of the boards have two holes in them. For HO scale, 32 teeth per inch would be your best bet if you can find it.

Here is the best picture of the end result that I have at the moment-

Hello Odie, thanks for the infos, it’s greatly appreciated.

I really like your Plumbing Supply building, it’s nicely built, painted and weathered.

I plan to soon get the set of 3 from Micro-Mark. http://www.micromark.com/3-piece-Pounce-Wheel-Set,6668.html

Sooner or later I bet I’ll use them all.

Hello Howmus, very good idea you have there, I think that’s the route I’ll take.

Preforming an image search on google for “old wooden houses” reconfirms my momory of them. One rarely sees nails showing through the wood even if there is no paint left.

I think its a “modeler thing” to create an impression more so than a repensentation of reality

In HO scale I suspect that that detail is too small to show. Even more so in N and Z scales.

I’m not saying don’t do it. I’m suggesting keeping it to a few buildings towards the front of the layout. Just some thoughts.

Hello Bob, you bring up a very good point; thank you for the additional infos and your comments on the topic.
