Power Rquirements

I am rewiring my layout and since I’ve got it partially dismantled I’ve had an attack of CRS (Can’t Remember STuff). So I have to ask the ultimate stupid question. Are Atlas switch machines powered by AC or DC?[?]

I use AC from the “accessories” terminals on an old DC power pack.[:)]

They should work with either, as long as there is sufficient voltage and amperage.

It is highly likely that you will blow Atlas switch machines if you use straight DC.

Use AC or a capacitive discharge system (which is charged up using DC).

I power mine with AC coming straight from a bell telephone relay powerpack thingy (plenty of voltage and amperage, too much prolly) there are goods and bads in doing this:

good

  • when you hit the button to move the armature THEY MOVE! and with a loud SNAP.

bad

  • if your dumb like me you’ll hold the button down too long (ONCE) and fry the switch machine and relay if you have one connected to it.

DC is prolly enough to do the job.
