Power Supply Design

I am working (?) on the design of a Variable DC Pulsed HO train power controller with adjustable PW frequency, and Pulse width, Amplitude controls. Any suggestions and Snarky remarks appreciated. (BSEE, 1974, Retired, now an HO Steamer !).

a constant frequency PWM throttle are very common. i built a very simple one using an LM324 and mosfet driver with a reversing switch

many DCC decoders use PIC processors that have PWM outputs driving an h-bridge allowing electronic reversing

while i was told that PWM at low frequencies can be harmful to motors, higher frequencies, 200 kHz is fine. variable amplitude is more difficult. a variable DC output with a pulse to overcome stiction as done in the TAT-IV isn’t common

you might consider using a relatively small arduino nano or micro with it’s PWM output as well as other features to drive a mosfet. it could be controlled by either reading a pot or use buttons to control the speed
