I was wondering if anybody would happen to know where to purchase precision nut drivers? I have looked at some hardware stores and they seem impossible to find, I guess because other then hobbies like trains and RC there of not much use, I have seen them in the micromark catalog but there $40 for a metric and standard set and I dont think I want to pay $80 American for a set if I can find them at a hardware store
Jameco Electronics has both metric and SAE 7-piece nutdriver sets for $8.05 (metric) and $9.89 (SAE) plus shipping.
Their web address is http://www.jameco.com and the catalog numbers are 261850 for the metric set and 261842 for the SAE set.
Prices at any local electronics supply store, except Radio Shack, should be about the same. I suspect that RS would be more if you can find one that sells such items.
Micromark also has an all in one tool set with the most popular sizes of nut drivers for $20.55. part #14158. I just went through this building a steam loco. I used to see mini nut driver sets at every feamarket tool booth I went into for $5-$10.Didn’t need them then. 10 years later I couldn’t find a set to save my life.
Could you use a set screw in place of a nutdriver ? I am assembling a Bowser loco kit,Bowser included a set screw to use as a nut driver to put the “bolts” into the driverers. This setscrew has a hexagonal hole in the top which will fit over a nut or bolt head if you hold the setscrew upside down. This hexagonal hole in the setscrew is where we normally put the tightening bar. joseph2 - you need to clarify what you are talking about please, because I for one do not understand. A set screw is a screw on a hub on a shaft for instance, that when tightened, holds the hub/collar in place. A nut driver is a tool with a hexagonal hole in the end sized to fit a nut; think of a socket on the end of a screwdriver. Except we are talking 3/64" and 2mm here.
joseph2- That’s a GREAT idea!!!Never thought of useing those. He’s talking about a socket cap screw. The kind you use an allen wrench for. You could make a great mini nut driver set yourself. They come in all different sizes. Metric and SAE.
Go to your hardware store and buy Socket Head Cap Screws or Set Screws in many different sizes. They have the hex shape machined in the head and will work for tightening hex head screws.
Also, All Electronics, Menard’s, Home Depot, Sears.
Okay, had a brain malfunction, I understand what you are saying now. Excellent idea if you do not already have a set.
Whether you make them or buy them, you may want to grind down the business end a bit as many of the screws and nutdrivers have the hex portion recessed, and they do not engage flat/thin head bolts well, if at all. Grind the protrusion and maybe do a semi pencil point job on it and no more problems.
