Never was much of a fan of GP30s (but those are still ok), GP50Ls and 3 window SD60Ms.
GE U30
EMD BL-2 (and BL-1)
First generation (I think)
Dont care for the electrics.
Just a little off topic?
SORRY! I guess I charecterize diesels and electrics together…
Don’t feel bad. I do the same thing with electrics and broccoli.[:D]
Jeff
Diesels 1st generation: BL2 takes 1st place with the Kraus Maffei’s in the #2 spot.
Diesels 2nd generation: SW1500… …yuck!
Diesels 3rd generation: Hmmmm. Nope, sorry. They all look “cool” to me.
first gen : BL2 or DL locomotives
second gen: GP9m Chop (does that count)
third gen: the newest UP centre cab switcher
1st gen- BL2 or the Alco DL109- looks like an E unit with an even steeper slanted nose and a 3 peice windshield.
2nd gen- either those VIA LRC’s or any Amtrak turboliner.
3rd gen- they’re all pretty good looking, with the exception of the MPI MP36- looks like an extended, smoother F59PHI.
First Generation: Baldwin S12 (hey guys i know, lets take a beautiful locomotive, the VO-1000, and make it loook like a it got dropped on it’s head as a child!)
Seccond Generation: GP40 (anyone ever think this one looked like the GP38-2’s looser brother?)
Third Generation: GP60M (Nothing says awkward like a GP with a widecab)
Cheers!
METRO
With a face only a mother could love[xx(]

The high hood GP30’s look “cool” (IMHO)
I nominate the JNR DE10 class B-C diesel-hydraulic, the only asymmetric Japanese diesel. Compared to the center-cab types (DD13 and DD51) the DE10 looks clumsy.
Google “JNR DE10 locomotive” for a photo (top right of second group.) Tried to post a link, but it didn’t work.

Any EMD “E” or “F” series
Geeps Rule !
This is much too loaded a question for me to answer but my fiance says that Alco PA-1 units look like buses. LOL! That is her opinion, not mine.
gotta say the cleburne rebuild cf-7, take a f-7, (one of the best diesels) and turn it into well hmmm, something just horrible. first generation has to be bl-2 what exactly are those angled pieces behind the cab for, and third generation, sd70ace what the heck did they do to the nose, beautiful angles that now have a box stuck on the front end, no style grace nothing.
Anything with sharp edges, flat cab roof, etc. Square is ugly.
Form Follows Function!!!Diesels aren’t supposed to be beautiful; they’re supposed to get the job done and they do that very well.
There are exceptions, of course, but put FM in front of anything and the next word out of my mouth is going to be “yuck!” - but, you know what? if I were to elect to do a transition era layout I would probably have a few FMs on the line because my pike would be one that bought about anything they could get their hands on in that era. I will go along with METRO, however; wide-nosed Geeps have the same esthetics as a bowl of yogurt or a Chrysler Motors automobile.
