Properly Weighted Boxcars

Need help to maintain smooth running of Boxcars on G-scale. Cars tend to Wobble allot going around Turns and thru Switches, I know one step is to change Plastic wheels to Steel, Can you also add weight to cars,
Currently have USA Box-cars and Track, Thanks Mike

Hi Mike,
USA are a problem with their plastic wheels, I fit Bachmann to mine when I can get them from my local shop. Look at the pivot of the bogie and see how much play there is from side to side and front to back, you may need to tighten the screw up or pack out with a washer. Weight is good but don’t add to much or you’ll need 3 loco’s for one car!!
How’s your track? does it need a bit of leveling here and there?
Cheers,
Kim

Thanks for Info, my track is Level, I think your right about the pivot bogie
I had a Test piece of track on work bench with Questionable Boxcars
and I rocked the car a little and wobble is very prominent, I’ll try adding washer
thanks for your help
Mike

First, check your 3-point suspension.
Not all have it, some need to be modified by trimming rubbing blocks on one end or shimming under the screw to hold tight.
Set the car on the track, press down lightly and rock slightly side to side.
If the car moves and both trucks stay against the rails, it isn’t right.
Plus, stop and think a minute about “weight”.
Are you modelling fully loaded cars, half-full, or empty?
I weight no boxcars. Ever.

Thanks again, Thats funny I was out in shed this morning shimming up under trucks
I compared one Box car to the other, noticable difference, I used small pieces of
Black eletrical tape 3 pieces per side worked great, plus its black blends in good.
