Is it possible to install a Proto 1 sound board in non-powered a unit? I have an extra Proto 1 unit I would like to put in the dummy of a Williams F-3 unit. If anyone can shine some light on this that would be great.

Are you going to use it on a variable track voltage layout? I’m thinking of doing the same thing. My bottom board fried a resistor (track charging a new battery) but my upper board looks fine. Most of my stuff is postwar Lionel do I’m not wanting to go to constant 18V systems. I guess PS1 is still my best choice for simple diesel sounds. I’m not professing to know how, I just wonder if it’s possible for the average non technician tinker(er)?
The older PS-1 may give you problems down the road with the sound system. Why not upgrade to either Electric RR or True Blast 2 by Williams for the sound unit? Western Depot or Trainworld may have something on sale for a great price. Don’t buy directly from the company who makes the unit, especially the Williams by Bachmann, Bachmann has very high prices when compared to Western Depot for the same item.
If I was going to for a sound system I would look at what Lionel uses to do railsounds on conventional engines a good source to check this all out would be boxcar bill he’s a parts distributor for Lionel and gives a discount over what Lionel advertises where most I dealt with are the same price as to what Lionel advertises here is a link to his website
I have checked this option and it isn’t any better than where I am at now with this thing. Williams by Bachman just released a prime mover and other sound board for their diesels and chances are they’ll be easy to hook up like the TBII.
I actually thing you’d be a bit better off trying to track down an old RailSounds diesel sound freight car. You wouldn’t need to wire anything and the sound would be better than PS-1.
