In an effort to make its famous game more relevant to the times, Hasbro is running a poll to rename properties on Monopoly.

Along with the names of famous Atlantic City street names, the railroads will be gone too. These are not part of the poll. Rubbing salt into the wound, they are to appear as airports. From now on you’ll have to fly.
I hope the locomotive token survives at least.
I’m just keeping my old set and let the lack of sales have them put the PRR & B&O back on!
It sounds like this will just be another special version of Monopoly. The announcement says the “classic” is still their best selling version.

Monopoly replaced the railroads with airlines… land on an airline and you have to start crying for a federal bailout.
I have also heard that they’re replacing jail with Enron…

The PRR no longer exists. Same for the B&O. They no longer have relevance to a younger generation. What is more interesting in the exclusion of either abstract or indecipherable RR names as they currently exist. CSX? BNSF? Hardly. Its an indirect or perhaps direct value judgement. Airlines have a relationship with the public. Railroads have hardly any relationship with the public in comparison. I am as nostalgic as the next person but I am surprised they lasted as long as they did.

Why CSX and BNSF? Why not IC, CNW, SP, CR, BN, ATSF, D&RGW, or any other recent fallen flag?

I would think they are not considered because they are extinct and are not recognizable names ,outside of the railfan community ,below a certain age.
