PRR model E44a HO (N?)

Hi,

I am building a new superstructure for the Bachmann E33 electric (HO) to represent the E44/E44a used by the PRR.

I have had two inquiries about it in N-scale. I was wondering if there had been an N-scale model of a U23C or a U25C manufactured. I have been out of N-scale since about 1974 and am not too familiar with the items that are/were available at one time.

Thanks for all responses.

Back in the late 70’s Trix made a U28C, you might find one somewhere on E-Bay.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

However I can not use the U28C.

The trucks for the E33 and E44 were the same as those used under the U23Cs and the early U25Cs. By the time the U28 came along, the three-axle trucks were evenly spaced.

Thanks again for the information.

The main problem with what you plan to do is that the E33 may actually be longer than the E44. It doesn’t make any sense to me either, but my HO E44 is shorter than my Bachman E33. I’ve checked prototype pictures, and all the doors and handrail stantchions seem to add and match up for the E44, so i don’t think it was built wrong (its also brass, so it better be built right!). This will require some modificaction of the frame, especially if using the brass shell, should you find one.

I think trying to build an E44 from an E33 might be pushing it. There are alot of differences, and you’ll have to painstakingly comb over the model and to removed the things that don’t belong. Even hard will be making the new roof, with all its number boards and headlights. I’m not sure where you’ll get pantographs either.

I’m wishing someone would make an E44, they’ve been in atleast 4 different paint schemes (PRR, PC, CR, Amtrak). and in my opinion, they look a lot better than E33s. For now,the Alco Models E44 seems to be the only alternative.

You have it backwards! the U23C came after the U28C. The U28C was between the U25 and the U30, and i cannot remember if it was a U25C with as much horspower squeezed out as possible, or if it was a less powerful version of the U30C. the U23 was a later model U-boat with a smaller engine. I’m fairly sure the U23s were the last U-boats made.

In any event, the truck
