PS to Trip to North Platte

I lamented in my musings on my trip to North Platte to see Bailey Yard that the viewing stunk - big time.

Today’s paper (LJS) - The project to build the Golden Spike Tower is moving forward! It began in 1997 and most considered it dead!

It will be a 90 foot tower with a panoramic 360 degree view of the yard. It will be on the north side (the poor observation platform is on the south side) and should be started in the spring and done in about 15 months. $6.25 million, with financing through the USDA!

I am so pleased. We have a spectacular sight to show the world right here in small town NE and to not take advantage of it is just not acceptable. Kudos to the people involved for getting this off the ground finally.

Now for another trip to North Platte…

Mookie

I’ll probably be there just before the groundbreaking, given my luck (which had better be good today, by the way!).

The new tower will be on non-railroad property, from what I gather, so it may be able to be maintained (and have the trees cut down) by the city or whomever.

You’ll have more than good luck on your side today, Carl.

Who knew the people at USDA were railfans(?)[;)]

Thanks, Brian–you were right, of course!
