Putting plastic people in diesel locomotives

I didn’t see this in the forum database. Although I’m talking about N Scale it also applies to HO.

Is it hard to put people in Kato locomotives? I was going to ask that with Atlas since I do see an engineer in the cab. The locomotives I was thinking of were P42, SD90, and other locomotives.

How much do I have to cut to make them fit if it works. I’m planning of adding people in my Amtrak Superliners.

Has anyone done this and had experienced doing it?

Extremely easy in ho scale. Just take the shell off.

I’m not so sure I agree with Jimmy_Braum’s suggestion that you can just glue an engineer or fireman figure into an HO locomotive without modifying them. I just did two figures in a Kato GP7 and they both had to have a fair bit carved off of them to allow the cab to fit back on to the shell. They ended up as skinney as Taylor Swift![swg]

Angelo: You seem to be looking for very specific instructions on how to fit people into a couple of engines. I think you need to strike out on your own. Its not that difficult to fit figures into anything you want.

I would suggest that you model only what can be seen. You will never see the engineer’s legs, nor much of his left arm (or the fireman’s right arm), so, if space is at a premium, file down or chop off the non-visible parts of the figure until it fits. If your engineer is going to be leaning out of his window you can file the body below his right arm so he looks like he is really leaning out of the window. Lose the legs. Nobody will ever notice.

Passenger figures need to be truncated too. In fact, at least in HO, most seated passengers will not fit into manufacturers’ passenger car seats. In order to make passengers look like they are comfortably seated not only do you have to remove most of the legs, but you have to carve some material off of their backs too. Same applies for putting drivers and passengers in automobiles and trucks. One forum member recommends leaving a bit of the tops of the thighs, but I think that applies more to figures mounted in automobiles with convertible tops in the lowered position.

I suggest that you acquire some engineer/fireman figures and some seated passenger figures and experiment on your own if you don’t get the specific answers that you are looking for here.

While this link pertains to fitting drivers to vehicles, it shows some of the surgery that might be required. Just don’t end up lobotomising yourself.[swg]

Hey Bear!

I started that thread! Now you are making me feel famous for asking the question! (Que in the sound of my ego trying to explode!!)[(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D]

Seriously, thanks again to DoctorWayne and chutton01 for their responses on that thread. Great information. I learned a lot.

I was thinking of my kato SD40. It had a built in cab with seats. I suggest getting the BLI engineer set figures.
