Quality Craft kit instructions

Hello modelers! I bought an HO Quality Craft kit at a train show #318 Chessie canstock boxcar and it had no instructions. Anyone know where I can obtain a copy? I already looked on HOseeker.net. No set of instructions listed there. Thanks.

Welcome Joe Ho ,have you tried the Quality Craft website sometime companies will have instructions online just for this reason.

That kit is about 40 years old and the company closed up 10 years ago.

Hi Joe,

I tried searching for that particular kit on Google but came up empty. I would suggest creating a search on eBay (called “Saved searches”) and see if another kit shows up. (Be sure to include the kit #) You’d have the instructions plus spare parts for your build.

I can’t find it in the Gloor Craft or Ambroid pages on HOseeker.net.
I think you could find the Spring Mills Depot model released in 2011, or the kitbash article published in the April 1991 issue of Model Railroading magazine, and use those as references.

I just looked at the sight. The font and color make it hard to see the words. Go to the site, click on Literature and Ambroid is 5 rows down and in the second column. I’m sure Gloor Craft is there too.

I do have two Spring Mills cars to reference. Thank you for the idea.

Yes the kit is a rarity! I got outbid on a kit on Ebay. I was so excited to see the kit at a train show a few weeks later, I just impulsed bought the kit for $5.00. Building a few of these kits over the years I thought I could figure it out. It’s nice to have the reference in case I get stuck.

I think this kit was one of the last HO wood kits they made. Quality Craft was the same people as Weaver O Gauge and the owners of Scalecoat Paint. They got out of the wood kit business when they started into the O gauge reproduction stuff.

When they retired, Atlas bought the O gauge stuff, Minuteman bought Scalecoat - that was 10 years ago.

So, still on the hunt for the kit #318’s instruction, has anyone ever used the Kalmbach Library or the David P Morgan Library for looking up kit instruction information, or do these libraries not house that type of information??
