Hello all. I was just wondering if anyone out there might be able to tell me if Bachmann produced any other 65’ heavy weight passenger cars besides the combo cars and coaches. I once heard a rumor that they also produced a dining car, but have as of yet to actually see one in the flesh… Also, did they make them in any other roads besides Santa Fe and Pennsylvania ?.
I have seen B&O, GN and NYC. I have only seen the combine and coach. I do remember something about other cars, but I think it was just lettering on the car sides. When mixed with othe passenger cars, they seem a little oversize at times.
Bachmann marketed four cars: a coach, combine, diner and open end observation. I used to own the entire eight-car set of NYC cars. From what I remember, the “diner” was the same as the coaches.
Okay. So they actually did produce other cars besides the combine and coach. I guess the diner and observation cars must really be rare because I have as of yet to come across them… I own a combine and three coaches in Santa Fe which I’m very pleased with, but would very much like to have the others as well if at all possible. If nothing else, I guess I could always re-decal a coach into a diner and modify the end of another and make it into an observation car. Not to sound lazy, but if at all possible I’d rather buy them ready made…
Thanks a lot for the info guys. I really appreciate it.
Knowing Bachmann they probably are are a bit oversized… I only run those type cars with those type cars so I wouldn’t have noticed that.
I’ve got a picture of a Pennsylvania 4-4-0 pulling four of these 65’ coaches hanging in my office here at the house that I’m guessing would have probably been around the early part of the 1900s. Not that it’s correct, but I use a Spectrum 2-8-0 Consolidation to pull mine. I tried a Model Power 4-6-2 Pacific a while back but it couldn’t pull more than a couple of cars at a time, so I sent it back for a refund and stuck with the 2-8-0. I sure wish Spectrum made a ten wheeler…
I wrote Bachmann earlier today and asked them about the 65’ passeneger cars to see what they had to say. If I get a reply I’ll come back and let those that might be interested know what they said.
I’ve got these four, one combine and three passenger. I’ve had them for decades. I also have never seen anything but the combine and passenger. I’m would like to convert the couplers and even the wheel sets on these has anyone done that? I’m also toying with the idea of repainting them to CP or even TH&B. Love to read or see what people have done with these cars. Sadly I’ve lost one of the doors on my combine so I’ll have to scratch build one of those, that should be fun.
i have about 16 of those cars that i picked up on ebay. they round out to about $8 a car. some are lighted. seven of them are NYC with different car #'s which includes a combine and an open platform observation car. some of the others are painted for pennsylvainia, up. and sf. i have seen b&o. i was planning to repaint them for NYC. there was an article in nscale magazine about 2 years ago where someone converted them into self propelled lackawanna mu cars with pantographs and trailer cars. these cars are out of production and may be hard to find. try ebay-bachmann-n. by the way every one of these cars were new in the box but most of the wheels were out of gauge and the axle wipers for the lights were so tight some of the wheels wouldn’t turn.
Sorry that the photo you attempted to display didn’t turn out. Oh well. Thanks for trying.
I haven’t heard anything back from Bachmann yet, but after doing a little research on my own, I’ve come to the conclusion that they only produced the combines and coaches in Santa Fe, and/but, only produced dining cars and observation cars for other roads such as NYC and GN…
In case you’re interested, there’s a couple of SF cars like these up for auction on ebay that are being sold for extra parts. It might save you the trouble of having to scratch build that door you were talking about.
Okay folks. I finally got a reply from Bachmann today, and they said that though they produced dining cars and observation cars in other roads such as Great Northern in the lighted 65’ heavy weights, they only produced combines and coaches in Santa Fe… And so, that puts the matter to rest for me and/or anyone else out there that might be wondering.
