I recently took advantage of Pentrex’s special email offers and purchased “S D - 40 - 2 s In The Canadian Rockies”. While watching this video I notice what looks like a box car between two of the locos. On the side it bears the number 1028 and also has some writing that I cannot make out, followed by " - 28". It has a door on the end. Is this a slug, or some other type of equipment? If it is a slug it is taller than US slugs. Does anyone know what this piece of equipment is? Enquiring minds want to know. Radio Control for helpers. They were used in the days before DPU. CP used former EMD, MLW and FM B-units for radio control cars.
Enr2099 Thanks for the info. I appreciate the superfast response. The body of the equipment is not a B-unit and it doesn’t look like a loco. It very well could have been a radio control car made from an old loco but this thing looked more like a box car. On the radio control units you mentioned did they rework and alter the structure to make it appear like a boxcar? Looking forward to your response.

Yes they were boxcars that contained the control equipment. I lived in calgary for over 10 years and they were a common site on most grain trains heading to vancouver. Dont think i have a picture of one online but i will look and see.

Jim: When I went west in the late 70s, the units looked like converted boxcars and were labelled “Robot 1” (at least, i don;t remember any Robot 2). I think they were painted Action Red like the locos.
