Question for Atlanta Railfans

What MARTA station is close to the Atlanta Amtrak station?

Thanks,

George

From what I remember there isn’t one close. Been a while though. There is one at Lindbergh, but that is well north, and then midtown, but that is further south than a short walk.

George,

It looks like the Arts Center Station on the North Line is the closest however it will take a Marta bus on route 110 or cab to get you from/to Amtrak’s Peachtree Station. You can see an interactive map at www.itsmarta.com/viewer1.aspx .

About the only thing I have ever found the Marta trains useful for was as an observation platform for the old Georgia Railroad Hulsey yard. The Marta trains still run by the yard but it just isn’t as interesting since Hulsey was converted to an intermodal terminal.

I did find MARTA useful for getting out to Decatur to visit some friends back in 1980. I do not recall how I went between the Peachtree Station and the closest stop; it may have been by city bus (especially since I carried a suitcase on one trip from the station).

Jay,

I lived and worked in North Georgia in 1979-1980. MARTA had just opened back then. I used to get on the train at Hightower station and ride all the way to Decatur. It passed by Hulsey Yard like you said. Back then Hulsey was the home for Georgia Railroad’s GP-7’s. There used to be an HO model railroad club housed in the frieght room of the Georgia Railroad Depot in Decatur back then that I belonged to. One time a group of us in the club boarded the Georgia Road mixed train and rode from Decatur to Social Circle and back. Those were some of the best days of my life.

George,

Those were great days. 79-80 was my senior year in high school over on the east end of the Georgia Railroad. All through the 70’s my buddies and I would ride the mixed trains between Thomson and Camak. I can still choke on the dust from those coach seats if I think about it hard enough.

Yes, Arts Center is closest. It’s fairly easy hike from there to the Amtrak station and is in a decent part of town. Go out the street level turnstiles, hang a right onto West Peachtree Street. West Peach merges with Peachtree St about a half a mile up. Continue on Peachtree about another 1/2 a mile passing over I-85 and you are there!

You can walk it in about the time it takes you to wait for and ride the bus.

For your railfanning pleasure, if you make a slight detour up 15th Street to Peachtree, you can get a view of the Best Friend of Charleston which is on display in NS’s office building lobby on Peachtree St. You can then just head up Peachtree St. to Amtrak. (It’s a nicer walk than West Peach, too)

Oltmannd knows. Let me add a warning: do be careful and make sure you stay on the street you want because it is easy to be confused and follow the wrong diverging street. My dentist went to school at Emory University, and he told me of walking back to the school one cold winter night, and he missed a turnout–and had to walk much farther in the cold.

And, I have missed the street I wanted, even when holding a map in my hand, in Québec. A compassionate Québeçois came to my rescue and assisted in directing me to the Gare Palais. He seemed to comprehend my high school French.
