Question for Michigan Railfans

I plan on attending two out of the four days of ’s Train Fest in July. I will ride behind the 4449 one day and take pictures the second day. I understand that all of the excursion trains are going to run along the old Ann Arbor Railroad from to and back. Here’s my question; Can anyone suggest good photo locations along the route? I am not from , my wife is, so I have been there a couple of times, but I don’t know the area that well. Also, does anyone know if an open air recording car will be available?

Thanks in advance,

George

Second that question. I’m not planning on riding at all (I do that all summer on the Adirondack), but I’d like to experience those beauties from trackside.

I’ve been to Owosso and to Alma, but have never followed the AA or any of its successors along this route. I’ve seen pictures taken at one crossing where a nostalgic seen can be composed with the structures by the crossing (and the aid of an antique car or two), but I can’t remember where that was. You’re not going to have too much other than woods or open fields, and relatively flat terrain wherever you go. I’d suggest availing yourselves of a DeLorme atlas and scouting out likely crossings on the day you ride the train.

I’m a bit frustrated that I can’t be there–I was one of the early supporters of the 1225 restoration project, and have yet to see her in action. And I haven’t seen the 4449 since it began its portion of the trip at the head of the American Freedom Train in Proviso over 30 years ago. And my vacation doesn’t come this year until a couple of weeks after all of the hoopla is over.

We are staying in Flint that weekend and going to be at the festival on saturday. We bought the hour train ride too.I just wonder how the engines are going to get to ossowo.Hope to see you there.

stay safe

I looked in my official guide from 1968 and found that it is about 38 rail miles one way from Owosso to Alma. I wonder if there is a wye at Alma to turn the engine.
