Question on a part viewed in MRvideo.

Hi Eveyone and happy holidays. I am an O scale modler however; I have a question on a video I watched by Cody Grivno. He was demonstarting weathering freight cars and used a tool to hold the car through the center body in one hand while air brushing with his other hand, does anyone know were I can purchase this tool. The tool looked to be possibly somesort of metal but not sure - thx

Sounds like the GB Engineering Work Holder.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for the reply. I assume that this can ve adjusted for O scale cars?

MicroMark makes a nice one too. http://www.micromark.com/hold-it-easy,7611.html

You could make one yourself with two sticks and a pencil.

Two lengths of appropriate material, some self adhesive felt for padding , a long nut and bolt to control the spread, and a hinge down at the bottom to hold it together. Probably $10 cheaper than the store bought

A piece of scrap lumber, slightly thicker than the interior width of the carbody, works well. I keep several sizes of such on the workbench beside the spray booth. A length of 1"x6" (or whatever suits your scale) is also useful for spraying small parts: use double-sided tape or simply regular masking tape with the sticky-side out, taped in place with more masking tape, to hold small parts which require painting.
For multiple similar parts, such as structure doors and windows still on their sprues, I mask-off the gluing surfaces (often these parts can be done with pre-cut strips of masking tape, as seen in the photos below), then simply grasp the sprue with my nitrile-gloved-hand and spray.

Some tools are truly useful and necessary, while others are elaborations of simple homemade versions - your choice. [:-^]

I would, however, highly recommend the nitrile gloves for any airbrushing or spray painting. Things like tank car bodies and steam locomotives generally require a more hands-on approach.

This likely won’t work for O scale, but for the HOers it is worth noting. David Bedard showed this in one of his recent threads.

An empty toilet paper role fits quite snuggly into freight car and caboose bodies and gives you a nice sized handle. Best of all, its free. I recently used them to paint a fleet of cabooses and they worked very well. One nice feature is that the tubes will stand on their ends so you can put the model down (being careful to not knock it over of course) and move on to the next car. I used four rolls to do eight cabooses but I could have had eight for the same price[swg].

Hi everyone,

i just wanted to thank everyone for their input and happy holidays

You’re welcome, glad to help.

Sorry about the delayed response. I have one, but haven’t used it for O scale. It’s turned just about closed for HOn3-sized stuff. But the screw in the middle that provides the adjustment looks long enough to hold O scale items. If not, it would be easy to either add a slightly longer screw or build bigger pads that contact the inside of the carbody.
