I remember reading awhile ago about the Lionel 9700 series boxcars with “9200 series” printed on the end of some boxcars are worth more then the ones with “9700 series” on them. Is this correct? I could not find anything on these.
I don’t think the number matters all that much. The value is if someone wants a certain car and what they are willing to pay.very few of those cars sell for more than $15/20 dollar range. I think there are a lot of nice looking cars in that group, they just don’t sell that well anymore.
The 9700 series boxcars are fun to collect. Some of the special run cars like the ‘toy fair’, and ‘season greetings’ cars can cost alot more.
As for the value, I don’t think it matters what end boards are on the boxcar. It is more or less how rare the car is.
The only “9700” car of mine is the 9712 B&O DD boxcar. It has the “9200” ends on it. I only paid $10 for it on ebay. The guy is local so I didn’t pay any shipping![;)]
Perhaps you are referring to the Glen Uhl Timken boxcars. Most of the yellow and orange cars that Lionel made for him as a special order had blank ends however a few shells had the number cast on the end. For awhile people were making a distinction between the two (and perhaps they still do) but I don’ know if that difference translates into a price difference today.
