Question posted on trainboard.com - tender brakes

Are the tender brakes on a steamer typically operated in conjunction with the independent, as in, will the independent necessarily operate the tender’s brakes as well, or is the tender considered part of the consist and only responds to an application of the train brake?

I have no idea, but that is an original question. Good job.

I THOUGHT I’ve read somewhere that the tender brakes are part of the independent. Where, I don;t remember. And that may not have been universal. However I cannot find any reference to how they were set up. I guess a good look at the piping on a real steam loco is in order.

Thank You.

Thank-you to all responders, and especially to Mr. Kootenay Central. I’ll pass it on to the asker over at trainboard.
