R J Corman's QJ 2-10-2

R J Corman has brought a QJ 2-10-2 from China to the US, had it unloaded in New Orleans and shipped it from there across Alabama to either their property in Kentucky or TVRM in Chattanooga. I have heard RUMORS about both. I heard another RUMOR that it was to be used on their dinner train. Can someone who lives in Kentucky and is familier with this situation fill us in on what is really going on? I live in Tennessee, so I have not actually seen any of this. If there is going to be a large live steam engine operating in Kentucky, I would really like to get up there to see it. I heard it is only two years old,so it should be running without any significant repair for some time shouldn’t it?

I know some folks do not care for foreign trains, steam in particular, but after seeing the two QJs running in a steam triple header with Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 261 two years ago – man it was exciting!

There are pictures on railpictures.net and YouTube of the QJ arriving in Lexington KY. I couldn’t find any news in the online version of the Lexington Herald Leader, however.

I can’t help to bring light to the situation of these engines, but you are misinformed about the age of these. 20 years is much more likely - and these would be about the absolute youngsters within the entire class. Production stopped sometime around 1987.

George word is that the QJ will be operated on the old EK (L&N) line from Louisville to Lexington. Shelbyville to Lexington is the route most mentioned. I have heard nothing about the Dinner Train and that run is very short also there is no place to turn the loco.

R J Corman had just laid a new line of track in lexington, KY train yard for the loco. I work in front of the train yard and the loco was here yesterday.

What we have been hearing in the Louisville area, is that R J Corman will use it for Charters between Lexington and Shelbyville, KY. A siding is being installed just North of Avoca at Old Henry Road. I am told this is to be used as a run-a-round to bring fans in each day for the Ryder Cup to be held later this year.
