Radio Interference

In my train room I like to sometimes have a radio on but when I turn on my Digitrax Zephyr I get a lot of noise and interference on the radio. What causes this and how can it be corrected?
Jarrell

I have noticed running trains on dirty track cause static on FM. But then Im still using DC and not DCC. Used my DCC funds to help with drug rehab for my Stepson.

A bad ballast in my lighs caused a problem untill I changed it out.

I am curious, is the static with or without trains running…take care …John

ANYTHING electronic will interfere with radio waves. Powerlines, phones, trains, lamps…

Thats just a fact - nothing can be done about it.

Heck if you drag your butt across the carpet and go near a radio, your static charge will interfere with it.[:D]

RFI shielding???[;)]

[(-D] Yup, any arcing will be associated with the emission of radio waves. Unshielded, they make radios squawk.

Jarrell, you probably aren’t especially keen to hear this right about now, but your wheel-to-track contacts are intermittent for whatever reason (kinked, uneven, gaps, dirty, or wheels that need cleaning). When they give up contact and when they regain contact, there is a small arc that produces both ozone and radio interference. The former is not good for insulation and other organic, petroleum-based products (yes, like your Shay’s plastic shell), and the latter is merely an annoyance. Okay, a BIG annoyance.

Edit: P.S.- the ozone produced is minute, so don’t lose (or is that “loose”?) any sleep.

No need to sweat the ozone. Just imagine the amount of ozone produced by all thunderstorms on the earth at any given time, except that is the good ozone.

Turn off the radio…

Or; listen to CD or MP3 instead for music, or an internet radio station or cable tv for news.

John, hopefully that other use of the dcc money will pay big benefits down the road. I know how it is, I just sent my daughter a couple of thousand for another problem, not drugs.
Thanks for the input.

Interfere!! Hey, I tried it, dragged across the floor…grabbed the radio antenna and all of a sudden picked up a station in Hong Kong… [:D]

But, isn’t producing ozone a good thing? I mean, car emissions are supposed to deplete the ozone layer so by running dirty wheels I can help the world!
[:p]

There’s bad ozone?
Oh cr*p!

Nigel, that is an option.
Thanks!
