I’m currently attempting to build a Rail Grinder using 2 Athearn Blue Box GP38-2-Based engines with custom cabs, and a Bachmann track cleaning car. Any advice? I’m also having difficulties cutting straight.

You’ll need many more cars for a grinding train. Many stones are involved, for progressive relatively light cuts at different angles, and there may be provision for multiple sets so that grinding can continue when one set becomes excessively worn or out of tolerance.
Don’t forget the water tank and the water cannons on the rear of the train! You could automate the ‘play’ of these fairly easily… although I don’t recommend squirting scale water.

So far, I’ve also got a water tank car, and I’m currently looking for something resembling the other grinder units.
Could build one of those small grinders used for switches and crossings.
They even have truck-based ones now.
