I am trying to find a way to search what type and how many rail cars a particular Class III owns. Is there any way to do this?
Also, is there any way to track car movements online? Particularly the quantity and reporting marks of cars being delivered to a specific shipper/receiver. Or to track quantity and type being interchanged between a Class I and Class III?
Lastly, is there any way to determine ownership/lessee status of a particular car? Such as whether ABCX 1234 is on a capital lease, per diem lease, or operating lease?
Any information or leads to such information appreciated.
What you are asking for, to me at least, would seem like some pretty private information for a railroad. I would have to believe, that this would be the type of information that their competitors would be looking for. Therefore, I bet it’s kept pretty tight.
Murph is correct, for the most part. But if you have access to an Official Railway Equipment Register, you should be able to find out the numbers and quantities of freight cars in the reporting mark of your subject railroad.
(Sorry–those things cost over a hundred bucks apiece, if they even sell single copies any more; my newest is two years old. Which reporting mark are you interested in?)
