Railfan spots within 200 mile radius of Indianapolis (quick request)

Just found out I need to be in Indianapolis the next couple of days–leaving tomorrow (5/13) afternoon. Would like to take a day to hit a couple of spots. Not familiar with the area. Any good suggestions (prefer away from Indianapolis, but if there’s any “can’t miss spots” in Indy, that’s fine too.

Also, looking for any hotels, motels or Inn’s with trackside view.

Thanks in advance for the quick response!

If you are interested in a little bit of working railroad history, then venture an hour northwest of Indianapolis to Crawfordsville where there are still working semaphore signals on the CSX (ex Monon)line. If you are looking for volume, then after C’ville head up to Lafayette where the NS and the CSX line run thru town…about 35 scheduled trains daily. Eat at Triple X in West Lafayette. Darned good food in a campus setting.

The pair at MP147 are the pick of the litter.

The Indiana Railroad runs SW of Indianapolis and has become quite a regional.

[#welcome]Haley Tower in Terre Haute Is open on Sat & Sundays 11:00 - 4PM. Were have 2 interlocking Toweres & were about 50 ft off the main line. All East/West & North/South trains go by Haley. (about 50- 60 per day… We also have a great viewing platform with power if you need. But nothing is better than sitting in Haley Tower watching trains go by The mid afternoon is dead, But late afternoon - midnight is great.

If you come when were not open many people just park in our parking lot to watch trains

Were easy to get to. Take I-70.to Terre Haute, get off of Rt 41 (3rd street) & go North sereral miles. Go past Ind State Un, & over the former “Big Four tracks”, Turn East on 8th Ave. (Union Hospital Sign) & go to 13 th Street. Turn North 1/2 block Turn East on “PLUM Street”. It’s a dead end street which turns into our parking lot.

Thanks Rob & MP173. Now have 2 days so might hit each of your suggestions. Won’t be there on Sat/Sun, but still will be fun to see.
