Railfanning Buffalo, NY?

Hey Gang,

In a couple weekends I’ll be out in the Buffalo area again (specifically Niagara Falls). I don’t know if the weather will be conducive (it is Buffalo in the winter after all), but are there any suggestions for railfanning the area, even if only to get a taste? It might be fun to see something that isn’t the Union Pacific or BNSF. [;)]

Thanks!

Chris

Hi, Chris -

How far of a radius around Buffalo/ Niagara Falls would you consider to be ‘‘the Buffalo area’’ ? 5 miles ? 50 miles ? 2 hours ? That’ll affect if and what I - and perhaps some others here - might recommend.

  • Paul.

If you hang out along the ex-NYC (now CSX) main line, you might be able to see the hot Q090 and Q091 perishable trains, with UP power and ARMN reefers (you don’t want to make a clean break from that western stuff, do you?).

Seriously, Chris, Buffalo has always been an area for me to go through, not to–and I always went to Niagara Falls from the Canadian side.

Very glad to see you were able to get a trip east in. I know it will be enjoyable! [;)]

For this trip, Paul, I think I’d be sticking within a 10 or 15 mile radius of northern Buffalo/NF.

Welllllll…no offense to your employer or anything…but I am a little tired of Armour Yellow. [;)]

Last trip I stuck to the American side. I’m debating about taking the foot bridge over to the Canadian Side this time for some winter shots of the falls. Alas, I’d be doing that alone, so I don’t know if I will. Still pondering. I think the weather will probably make up my mind for me.

I’m quite looking forward to it! [:D]
