Railfanning Cancun

I’m going to be the Cancun area next week, and I’m just wondering if there are any KCSM tracks in the area or any other railfanning opportunities…

Thanks,

Ross R.

You will really be disappointed. During spring break there is just nothing to look at. [(-D]

We’re actually not leaving until late next week so we’ll be there primarily after spring break if that has anything to do with it.

Are you going to rent a car?

I think you need to drive to Merida to see anything. I haven’t been there, but I did look into a trip once. I don’t know what the freight action is there at all, but here are some links you might like.

The Maya Express is a tour-train –

The Merida Railroad museum looks very interesting to me –

We are renting a car, so I’ll check it out…

I can’t find it on the web anymore, but there used to be pictures somewhere of the Merida train station (which looked like it was downtown).

I’m trying to remember if I saw a freight yard there or not… I honestly don’t recall. Maybe someone who knows the area better can answer.

Wow thats quite an interesting deal, but $4K for 2 people? too steep for me.

Hmmm…Cancun eh ? ever been there ?

HOT HOT HOTTTT!!!

and HUMID!!! Holy crap was it humid! all you need to pack is a hat, sunglasses, tank tops, light shorts and flip flops, anything else is just dead weight.

If you get the chance better to check out the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza or Tulum which are nearby.

and BEWARE OF THE TIMESHARE SALESPEOPLE, they will start on you the moment yuor off the plane with offers of free tickets to this or that, its BS, all they want to do is get you to thier “resort” and then pressure you to buy into a timeshare their, its a waste of time, you may get your free tickets but you’ll blow 1/2 a day listening to their sales pitch.

I was actually thinking it would a good train to photograph.

Hey,

Here’s a great Mexican Railway fan site. It’s chock-full of great stuff.

You are really not serious thinking of trains when so many other things to do in Cancun like fishing, boating, wind surfing yada, yada, yada. Stay away from the lagoon as it is full of crocs (no joking) you will see signs posted. I do not know if they have emigrated to the ocean side as yet. There was a show on Animal Planet about it so be very careful!

When given the choice between fishing and train watching, I’ll pick train watching everytime. The best, of course, would be fishing along railroad tracks where you get to do both.

That maybe but Cancun is one of those “exotic” places in the world where trains should move to the back burner while others things like I mentioned & now add para sailing, riding the banana boat (if you can) enjoying pina colada’s so on & so forth should come to the fore

I agree , if I ever go to Cancun I will be looking for the trains … I can see half naked beuatiful women anytime here in the Northeast !!!

I think you entirely missed the point about “nothing to look at”!

Half women? You live in a very strange place.

Railfanning has to be the only hobby where those who pursue it criticize others for pursuing it.

I am thinking about traveling by train for 5 days just to spend two days looking at other trains. What’s not to criticize?

Jeaton,

Sounds like a great trip! [swg]
