I am going to Hershey Park, PA with my daughter’s Girl Scout troop this Friday(6/10/05) through Sunday(6/12/05) and I was wondering if there are any places nearby where I can sneak away to Railfan[?] I know this is short notice, but maybe someone can help? Thanks in advance!![:D]
Yes, there are possibilitties, but you need a better expert than me. I’ll move this back to the top.
Wherever you end up, try to be downwind of the chocolate factory.
YUMMMMM!!!
There are quite a few good places in the Harrisburg area, which is just west of Hershey. There is also an overpass in Hershey where you can get westbounds passing the factory, and monorail tracks.

When I went to Hershey Park last year, I was able to see the a really good looking NS Dash-944CW with a mainfest, heading towards Harrisburg. I was on the apex of the ride Great Bear when I saw it. I wasn’t even paying attention to the intesese drops, because the train was there. I started screaming when I saw it though, the people next to me thought I was nuts!!! I went back on that ride after about 40 seconds of riding it the first time to see the mainfest again. Man that was fun, high alitude and trains what more can you want from a day at Hershey Park???
There are several locations to photograph Norfolk Southern freights passing through Hershey. Dougal mentioned the bridge west of the chocolate plant. The bridge is located above the former Hershey Reading passenger station; the building is no longer in place. The photos from the bridge are westbound shots of trains rounding the curve through the site of the former Hershey Station
Another good location is the area around the former Reading station in Swatara, PA which is near Hershey. I believe the former station is now a private residence, but this is a good location for photographing eastbound trains in the morning with a feed mill in the background.
Thanks for the tips, I’ll let you know if I actually get a chance to sneak away, and how I make out , if I do!! Thanks again!!
Your not to far from Lacaster County…Home to Strasburg Railroad and Penna State Railroad Museum. Also, i believe Amtrak/Ns mainline is not to far out of Hershey.
It was great!! We camped at Hershey Highmeadow Campground, and our campsite was literally a stones throw from the tracks[dinner]!! A double mainline(East and West, I think) with large freights(80 to 130+ cars) every [:D]half hour[:D] or so. I loaded film in my camera and snapped pics of every train that passed, when I looked at the film indicator on the camera, it was on 35, and I only had 24 exposures. I had mis-loaded the film[:(] and it never avanced once[banghead]!! I have NO[:(] pictures of ANY[:(] train that I saw[:(!]. I am such a[D)], I need a shirt with an arrow that points up and says[#wstupid]. Oh well, at least I got to see them in the first place! Thanks to all !!!
Sounds like a good reason to make a return trip!!
I’ve done that trick, too. I’ve yet ot misload the electrons in my digital, tho’.[:D]
