Railfanning Tampa/St. Pete

Hello everyone,

I’ll be in the Tampa/St. Pete area on vacation in June and would appreciate any advice about good railfanning spots.

Thanks in advance!

PD

I think the majority of everything down there is street running.

There is some very cool street running in Tampa. I don’t think you will see street running in between such tall buildings anywhere in the United States. When I was there I saw about 3-4 freight trains a day, and Amtrak.

Good luck,

Gabe

Best spot in Tampa is the east end of Yeoman yard where it crosses the Tampa bypass canal. From I-75 take St rd 60/Adamo rd west to N 78th st. Go right and it will take you right to the tracks. Park on the left side of the road near the water. People go there all the time to fish so you won’t have to worry about being approached by police or RR employees. You’ll see any freights that come into the yard, the phosphate trains that run over to the Bone Valley, and the Tropicana train. The other track out of town is farther north. You can see the bridge from there but you would need binoculars to read the loco #'s. That is the line that handles the Amtrak trains, TOFC/stack trains, and occaisional light enigne movements but there is less action on that line.
