Railfanning with an iPhone

Hi everyone,

I’m a new-ish railfan (I joined the hobby at the end of last year) who currently doesn’t have the budget for an expensive camera yet. However, I do have an iPhone 14, and it has good image quality and decent video quality. I’ve gone out and taken videos and photos with it, and it’s served me well.

I’d like to learn some advice from some of the more seasoned railfans on how to get good shots and any tips/tricks from other railfans who use an iPhone.

I have been railfanning for over 50 years. I currently use a Nikon D750 with 3 different lenses. I mostly use my Nikon 24mm-120mm zoom unless light is real low from clouds or late day. I also have an iPhone 14 Pro which I do use for rail photography when lugging around the D750 is not practical. I get great photos with the iPhone and it is easy to do video also. The iPhone also has zoom and wide angle settings which are very useful. Todays phone cameras are amazing in their clarity and versatility. The advantage of a camera with a good zoom is you can get good closeups of scenery and the train or real wide angle photos for tight photo angles. With your iPhone you will get great pictures. Make use of the zoom and wide angle settings. Also edit your photos for blur or to make them closer which is easy on the iPhone 14. Enjoy and always stay safe and alert.

Thanks man!

The iPhone is the way to go for almost any opportunity these days. I’ve got friends who have set aside their wonderful Canons and Nikons because of the convenience of their cellphones. When your budget allows to purchase a digital or film camera go ahead and throw your $$$ at them. They are great once you master them. However, the iPhone will likely be with you more often and readily capture almost anything you encounter. I personally traded in my Nikons years ago for the Apple iPhone. My budget couldn’t support all the digital camera costs.

Gotta agree with that.
