They rejected it the first time for the nose not being lit up.

Nice pic. Although i entered some my self, there rejections dont even make sense! Here’s the pic. It never got in though, stuborn [censored]

The nose is lit well. I think its a pretty good picture, certainly worthy of a spot on the site.
Would have been much better without the utility pole sticking out of the top of the unit.
I know how you feel. My sig pic didnt get accepted either. But I know I gotta work harder.
Glen Ellyn, I don’t know what the heck is wrong with Railpictures? I think that is a very good shot of that IHB power. They must be nuts, um I don’t think it was your falt that the nose wasn’t lit up, you couldn’t control that. So, given the situation that is something that is out of your control, and they should of accepted the pic, or give you a reasonable explination as to why it is rejected.
Yes he can - take the picture from a different location - is it that hard to figure out?
Your pic is grainy, not sharp, and extremely poorly lit - looks like you shot it in the afternoon with a high sun angle - the engine is dark and underexposed. And its crooked. Makes prefect sense why it was rejected.
If I had to quibble, the gas meter in the foreground is distracting.
First off all im VERY new to railfaning. Second off all THAT TRAIN IS IN THE MIDDLE OF TURNING INTO THE VILLA PARK STATION, IF YOU KNEW THAT LINE YOU’D KNOW THERE IS A CURVE THERE! THIRD OF ALL, ITS A SMALL CAMERA (powershot A70)!
Fourth, yes it is in the afternoon, BUT IS STILL A
[censored] GOOG PICTURE!
Getting a bit snippy are we? Chill, bud.
Welcome to the hobby. Railfanning, is distinct from PHOTOGRAPHY - you can put the two together obviously - there is much for you to learn. Being a railfan photographer is not simply being a railfan and taking a picture - anyone can take a picture.
Super-elevated curve or not, the pic is crooked. Also, I don’t really care what the camera is, and neither does Railpictures - why should anyonecare what you took the pic with? It either is a quality picture or its not - a carpenter may only be as good as his tools, but he can do a lot with them and use how to utilize them best.
If you’re new to this you should realize you need practice and have a lot to learn, and aren’t going to be perfect your first shots.
I like it however the utility pole takes alot away, as well as the gas pipes in the foreground.
Professional photographer Ken Rockwell rates the A70 very highly, and says that he has made 12"x18" prints from it. If it lives up to his standards, you have no excuses.
That photo is underexposes. Use any image editing program to lighten up a bit and I think that you’d be amazed at how much better it looks.
By the way, always shoot at the highest resolution and never use the digital zoom. Beyond that, any bad pictures you have are your own fault.
To avoid the same thing happening in the future, when you’re in a situation like that, dial in a stop or two of exposure compensation. Heck, since it won’t cost you anything, play around and find how much compensation works best. Just don’t decide until you’re looking at it on your computer monitor.
Finally, learning a thing or two about the theory of exposure sure can’t hurt your photos.
Woah, simmer down young buck…
Whats the big deal with gettin a pic onto railpictures anyway? Take pics of what you like to remember later, and quit worrin about how popular they can be.

I think that pic is just fine. I agree that i’d remove the pole in the mid of the unit, but that could be done in photoshop, or do it the east way, and simply crop the photo. Personally, I"m fine with wide photos. I like the normal 2x3 ration, but I don’t see any reason not to have wide and short shots now and then.
I don’t think the photo is overexposed. The lighting on the front and the back of the second unit is good. It was a photo with very bright sun and some deep shadow. There isn’t much you can do to correct that. Exposure will only go so far. If it was overexposed, everything would be off-including the brightness/contrast/look of the nose. I think that if you coud lighten the trucks, it might make the ligting look a little more even and eliminate the slight “overexposed” look, but that’s getting really picky. The only other thing I might try is to trace the “Harbor” on the side of the locomotive again in black in any basic photo editing tool.
I also like the gas pipe in the front, the evidence of the switch heater is a nice detail for a railroad.
It’s not the best, but Railpix has much worse.
Also, Coborn35, I’d try that sig pick with the sun a little farther behind your back, and do it standing closer to the fence on the right, to show the nose and the right side of the locomotive. (i’m assuming the sun was behind you and slightly to the rigt, or almost directly behind you when you took the picture. I’m not positive, but thats where it looks like the light is coming from.) Can’t beat a nice lookin gp30!
My thinking is that I believe that Photography is to have fun nothing to cry about. Yes you can be grumpy when you don’t get the shot you want off I’ve had those but it is mostly to have fun.
Keep trying buddy, you will only get better!
oh, I remember this one time…got a shot much better than I expected, and it got rejected. it was my best shot. Rejected for Bad Angle. I appealed, andyou may remember it as the shot of the week…

Well, are they complete smegheads or what?
On your photo: I think it’s good, the colours are quite nice. The side may not be lit, but you’ve pulled it off!
Yeah, railpictures can give some questionable rejections once in a while, but stick with it and take the advice of other people who know what they’re talking about. After a few rejections, I put more thought into what I was doing and have since had very good luck getting pictures accepted. Good luck.
Weez,
It looks to me like you had the sunn striaght up or you were looking into the sun Just remember to take pics on the sun lit side and when its lower in the sky.Early am,early pm.Anything around noon you will have showdows…South bound traffic in the am and pm will have good lite on the nose,Good hunting
Thats why I have started my site…If it get rejected for any reason, I put it on my site.
