Does any body have any good ghost stories or haunties of railroad buildings?
Since Halloween is coming up I just want to know.
There’s a book titled Ghost Trains which is a compendium of practically every railroad ghost story every to see print. A statistical analysis of the book suggests RR ghosts are unable to see things at night. Most of the ghost stories indicate the need for the ghost to carry a lantern. Also, there seem to be an inordinate number of headless RR ghosts running around - all apparently the result of a gruesome RR accident in the far and distant past.
And there are many stories of ghost headlights comeing down the tracks, sometimes in places where tracks have been gone for years. This headlight phenomenon also happens a lot in tunnels.
Heres one about a old B&O tunnel.
In “Ghost Stories of Indiana” (IU Press) there is a story about the ghost in the B&O tunnel just east of Tunnelton, Indiana. I had the (mis)fortune of reading about it about 20 years after seeing it for myself.
Seems the sightings date back to the date of the 6-foot-gauge O&M Railroad, which built the tunnel. I saw it as clear as a bell back in 1966, while messing around the tunnel late one night with four friends. We all saw it and if you asked me to go back to the West portal of that tunnel again at night, I would not for any amount of money.
I believe the book is still available. The story is all too real.
Oh, and don’t forget the Haunted Bridge on the NYC just west of Avon, Indiana. I never saw anything there myself.
Every day I walk beside a place where a guy got killed a month or so ago by a DMU.
I’ve walked there in the morning, midday, or even at night, no strange things about it. It doesn’t even feel uncomfortable, or have any kind of “vibe”
I’m not saying such things are not possible, because how would I know, but
in this case, this man left nothing strange on the site where he got ran over by a train (he was lying on tracks when the train killed him)
Nothing exept a few candels near the site.
There is the one about the moon creek cemetary ghost train in Streator. If you are parked under a certain tree on the outskirts of town and you hear 3 thumps you have 3 minutes to clear that crossing if you fail you are stuck there til dawn. I have heared and been stuck til dawn at that crossing by a late 1800 train and once I tried to go through it and had a dent in my door afterwards changed the door out and the NEXT MORNING THE DENT WAS BACK PULLED IT OUT AND RIGHT BEFORE MY EYES IT REAPPEARED!!!
The local one we always heard back in IL when I was a kid, was the ‘Corn Cob Man’. He was walking down the track one night, and because he was deaf (of course), he didn’t hear the train coming. The train hit him so hard, that he went flying into the corn field and was impaled by dozens of corn cobs. He now walks the track at night, searching for the Engineer of the train that killed him.
One time an older kid dressed up with corn cobs poking out of his clothes and hid in the brush off the tracks one night… and when kids walked by, he proceed to scare the crap out of them.
