Railroading around Dunkerque and Brussels

During late April and early May, I’ll be spending time in Dunkerque and Brussels. I’d appreciate anyone’s advice on “must see” railroad sites and rides, museums, and model railroad shops in/near those cities. Oh, and I’ll be taking a side trip to Waterloo. Thanks!

Mark

PS – The cheapest part of this 18-day trip is the 11-day ocean cruise from Florida to Dover ($50 a day for lodging, transportation, food, and entertainment)

Thanks for the information, Marc.

We normally take the trains when in Europe. But last time we rented a car, partly because I wanted to find out how fast a subcompact car could go on the Autobahn. Yeah, distances can be short in Europe. One day we drove from Pforzeim, Germany to Strasbourg, France just to taste the pate. Another time we drove from near Trier, Germany to Luxembourg to try some cheval. (Too bad cheval isn’t served here in the States.) Both were just one-day round trips.

Why go to Europe to taste pâté and cheval ? Just come here to Québec City, Canada – its closer and cheaper. [;)]

I can get both pâté and cheval (horse) at my local supermarket (and, yes, it is labelled and sold as “cheval.”). Most pâté is quite delicious; but you won’t catch me eating a horse (no matter how hungry I might be). [;)]

I’ll get there, someday. Alberta, PEI, and Labrador are nearing the top of my list too.

The Luxembourg chival steak was rich and juicy…Saw a lot of it in the market in Reykiavik, but not listed on the restaurant menus. Perhaps Icelanders don’t eat out much or they are sensitive to most Americans’ prejudices.

Here is one of the two locomotives (0-4-0T) used in the construction of the the Reykiavik harbor breakwater. (Iceland never had a common-carrier railroad.)
