railroads in the Toledo Ohio area

Would anybody know the railroads that service Toledo Ohio and any shortlines in the Toledo area I understand its the bussiest area of rail roading in the USA

The major players are Norfolk Southern, CSX and Amtrak. In addition there is Canadian National which operates the old Detroit & Toledo Shore Line, Wheeling & Lake Erie, Toledo Terminal, Indiana & Ohio (old Detroit, Toledo & Ironton), Ann Arbor and Maumee & Western.

Just got back from Deshler - about an hour from Toledo. All CSX, but plenty of “visitors” as well. Fostoria (also about an hour from Toledo, but east of I-75) has the “Iron Triangle” - which, IIRC, includes NS and CSX traffic.

Good area for 'fanning.

If you are traveling, and have options, stay in Akron.

They made a hotel out of the old Quaker Oats grain elevators right next to the CSX three-track main. I was put up there by coincidence by my secretary once when I was doing depositions there. It is the coolest thing, perhaps ever.

I had a 11th-story room overlooking the tracks. Having some beer and just sitting out the balcony and watching a train go by every 20-30 minutes was really awesome.

When I was in Toledo back in May for an ARCA race,I didn’t see any trains on Saturday or Sunday while I was there,as compared to May of '08,when I saw/heard about 25-30 trains altogether. Fostoria still wasn’t too bad when I visited it this year for the first time.

I did kinda wonder where all the trains were, though.

Im not sure its the busiest in the USA, pretty sure Chicago holds that title. It is still busy though. The CSX has a couple yards in the Walbridge (southeast of Toledo a couple miles) area. NS has a yard in Toledo (not a good area). The Ann Arbor has their yard near the Jeep plant where I75 and I280 meet. CNs yard is along I75 as soon as you cross the state line from Mich. Wheeling & Lake Erie also uses this yard.

FYI, the Toledo Terminal is part of CSX.

well the Maw (maumee& western) doesn’t go past napoleon too much right now.Its tracks stop in Liberty Center ohio. They have empty leaser coal hoppers in storage on their track just east napoleon. Also you have the Toledo lake erie & western(bluebird) tourist line between waterville and grand rapids.if you visit the toledo zoo NS might run a grain special over the anthony wayne trail to the andersons in maumee.

stay safe
