Railsound Tender

Hi all ,

I have a Lionel steam engine, a 4-4-2, it came with the Pensylvania Flyer set, I think it might be the least expensive Lionel steam engine that they make, but irreguardless it’s a good solid engine, it runs smooth, and is very reliable. I would like to get a Lionel railsounds tender for it, but will any Lionel railsounds tender work with it , or do I need a certain one, also Im useing Lionel track, but MTH transformers, are the MTH transformers compatible with a Lionel railsounds tender? Any info will be greatly appriciated,

Thanks Much,

Paul

Paul, just find a Railsounds or Trainsounds tender and put it on the track;; you will be good to go

BDT,

Thanks much for the info.

Paul

Hi Again Paul,

You can hook up any tender behind that 4-4-2 that the draw bar will mate with, some draw bars are a little different as far as shape goes if they will hook together, you are good to go.

The Rail Sounds and Train Sounds tenders should work fine with any MTH transformer that I know of. Not a part of your question but an FYI for you is that many MTH Proto Sound and Proto Sound 2 Locomotives can have SERIOUS issues (nothing that would damage them that I know of) being operated with a Lionel CW-80 transformer. They will actually run OK, but the CW-80 is not a pure sine wave transformer, but rather it chops/clips the sine wave, and that can confuse the electronics in a lot of MTH lokies, they run fine, but the horns and bells can sound almost continuously, and will get very annoying very quickly.

Jumijo and I [last spring] wittenessed a Railsounds tender at Northeast Trains. Sounded great. Per the owner, was a new version.

I have the Lionel 19833 Tender and it sounds great behind my PW engines. You could try “epay” right now…just search Lionel 19833. Regards, George

I also bought the Pennsy Flyer set and was thinking about getting a tender with sounds. Does anyone have either:

Pennsylvania Steam TrainSounds Tender 6-26871 or

Lionel Lines Steam TrainSounds Tender 6-36788

And if so how does it sound and work?

They say it Features: “TrainSounds sound system with steam chuffing, steam whistle, bell, squealing brakes and operator-controlled multi-part crew dialogue”

Does the steam chuffing sound work when the train is moving, then if you stop the train does the squealing brakes sound? I have read before that while the Train is in Neutral and you hit the whistle or bell button the crew dialogue will sound. Am I correct to assume that this is how the TrainSounds tenders work?

I don’t have any first hand knowledge of those tenders but you might be able to check the Lionel “customer service” area on their site for the PDF versions of the owner’s manual. If they are there it should answer most, if not all, of your questions unless they get answered here. [tup]

No. But I have the Polar Express Trainsounds tender. Same sounds, different shell.

And if so how does it sound and work?

It sure doesn’t sound the same as the one I heard at North East Trains. Not nearly as nice. Especially the whistle.

Chuffing sound when moving, unless you press the whistle or bell button. Then you hear those sounds. When the whistle or bell is done, the chuffing begins again. Railsounds continues to chuff while the whistle and bell are sounding. The brake squeal is heard when you slow the train down suddenly.

The whistle sound is not what I consider a good one. I can’t tell if it’s a whistle that sounds like a horn, or a horn that sounds like a whistle.

I have read before that while the Train is in Neutral and you hit the whistle or bell button the crew dialogue will sound. Am I correct to assume that this is how the TrainSounds tenders work?

Yes, and the dialogue is quite clear and easily heard. Pressing the whistle multiple times triggers different dialogue.

A potentiometer controls the volume.

Thanks dougdagrump, I looked up the manual like you said and read teh manual. Good idea, to look up the manual.

Also thanks to Jumijo for your answers too. Your answers are a lot more informational than the manual.

Thanks so much!
