Re: Bergie, a suggestion for tomorrow

Likewise. More democracy. More Spam.

I must respectfully disagree. This is not the town square, it’s private property. No one is welcome here unless the moderator makes it so. The real problem is that there’s no full-time moderator here. With over 40,000 members, a certain percentage of undesirable people is inevitable. If a disruptive individual has his posts deleted on sight, he will go find a forum with more lax moderation. Leaving the disruptive posts up not only gives the sponsor of the forum (Model Railroader Magazine) but the hobby itself a very bad image for someone who’s logging in for the first time. The wreckage from this weekend needs to be cleaned up. To prevent future probelms, I would submit the following measures have to be taken:

  1. A more secure registration system. No using Hotmail or Yahoo as an address, it must be a real ISP.

  2. Any new member should have the first 50 posts moderated so the management can see what type of member he will be.

  3. A full-time moderator, including after hours and on weekends and holidays. Disruptive posters love to strike at the beginning of a three day weekend because they have the maximum amount of time to run wild. It’s up to Bergie and the MR staff how they want to accomplish this. It can be either all paid staff or a combination of paid staff and selected volunteers. Either way, it has to be done to keep this place a viable forum to showcase our hobby.

What man likes to be told how to do his job especially by someone who does not know anything about his job? You think he will read this and say “wow great idea” I bet he will not like that you are trying to suggest him how to do his job better. Lets see if this is amongst the deleted post tomorrow too

I agree with the guy on this one. I’m sure Bergie has been doing his job long enough to know what to do without input from anyone here. His greater responsibility is to Kalmbach not us, so I’m pretty sure I know where his loyalty lays and how he’s going to deal with the posts in question.

I’d like to comment on your suggestions:

  1. I think this would be an excellent approach to the problems that arise from time to time on this forum. Either using an ISP based email address or doing something similar to ebay’s seller registration (ID verify) might be helpful.

  2. This idea is not a good one. Anyone can explode at any time. Look what happened to the target of the photo quality attacks. He was known to most on this forum as a peaceful man (still is), but was pushed to the point where he lost his demeanor and exploded. We

I hope not but if they do “WE” have nobody else to blame but ourselves.
