Read any good books?

New to the whole railroading hobby and looking into increasing what little knowledge I already have about railroads. While not a book, I already subscribe to TRAINS which has been a big help. Just wondering what if any good books are out there pretaining to railroads in general or specific railroads that I could possibly look into?

Thank you!

First things first, welcome to the family of railfans! Second if you live in the Northeast region of the U.S.A check out the magazine Railpace, check out their site at www.railpace.com . Also try to find the book Altoona Action, thats a great book, they have photos of PRR, Penn Central, and Conrail.

Let me echo NJMike and welcome you also.

Suggest you check out local model RR stores or RR museums in your area. Many of them stock books on various RR subjects from different lines across the country.

If you want to know where the rail lines run, check out the SPV atlas series. They are about $25 + tax. I think WI is in the “Great Lakes West” volume.

Read “The Railroad, What it is, What it does” available through Simmons Boardman Books www.transalert.com

Kalmbach has a number of good titles too. “Diesel Locomotives” is my current favorite.

Thanks for the suggestions and welcoming. I think I will order The Railroad: What it is, What it does. Sounds like the “bible” of railroading and while I never knew there was such a book for beginners like me, I think its exactly what I am looking for and what a great starting point. Hopefully it will help me understand all this “railroad talk” I read in the forum and in the magazine. I think this is money thats going to be well spent.

visit second hand book stores. Some of them have great values on second hand books or try amazon.com for real bargains. I now pick out a specific railroad and try to find out as much about that individual rr as I can from the internet or from the multitude of books I have. Then I will dwell on one subjuct for a month or so delving into such topics as the Panama Canal RR., Maintenance of Way eqpt., Industrial locomotives etc ect
