Newbie here,
My wife and I are trying to build our first N Scale layout. To keep the scenery simple, we decided to put grass mat over a 3’x5’ sheet of insulation that is glued to a particle board base. I’d read that liquid nails worked on vinyl grass mat – but not for me. I could not get the mat positioned and flat. I then tried diluted white glue as a test. No joy there, either. Like my worst wallpapering nightmare.
I’m looking for general advise on technique but I think we’ll be trying Woodland Scenics own mat adhesive. What’s the coverage like? How much should I get.
The local hobby shop has attitude and unfortunately doesn’t want to advise newbies. Too bad for them, it just drives me online for advice and shopping.
Thanks in advance,
dgrc
How about using carpet glue or mastic for vinyl flooring? I used it to glue sheet goods to wood and it holds like crazy. It stays slightly elastic but will never let loose. It won’t dry out and form a hard shell as white glue or liquid nails.
Another thing that may work good is cheap latex calk without silicone. It holds track to cork roadbed, and cork to foam very well. You could try a test on one corner.
Thanks for the idea.
Here’s what happened, I went to the local hobby story that had ReadyGrass in stock and bought a new sheet. While there, I asked one of the enormously non-helpful employees, "How much adhesive should I buy to lay down a 3’x5’ section. The answer, “I don’t have a clue.” followed by a long pause. Fortunately another custmer overheard the question and had the real answer. “I just did two 4’x8’ panels. Lay down a bead of Liquid Nails at one end. Attach the end of the ReadyGrass roll and let it set up for about 15 minutes. Spray the base with 3M Super 77 (for wood) or Super 78 (for foam) and unroll the mat.”
So I bought the mat and didn’t let the door slap me in the butt on the way out. I went elsewhere for the Super 78.
