Another one of my excursions on my recent Chicago trip took me to the Museum of Science and Industry. Here are a few rail related shots from that outing:
First up are a couple of shots of the Pioneer Zephyr.
Nice shots of the Pioneer Zephyr. We took Grandkids to the museum a month or so ago and that was my first trip in more than 20 years. Back when, both the train and the German submarine were displayed out doors.
Some personal notes about the train. One of his many Great Depression jobs, my father worked at the Chicago Worlds Fair and saw the arrival of the Zephyr at the end of its historic Denver to Chicago nonstop run. I actually road the last passenger run of the train-a fan trip from Lincoln, Nebraska to Galesburg, IL. After an overnight stay in Galesburg, the train was deadheaded to Chicago for a truck movement from a CB&Q yard to the museum.
The Zephyr looks good at any angle. I used to see them on the high line coming into downtown St. Louis. That was when most RR equipment was rather dull, and I thought I was seeing the future. (This was about 1946) If only everything looked that good, then and now.
Great photos. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in that museum, but it’s always worth the visit.
My wife and I visited there a few years back- that layout is phenomenal!
Funny story about the commercial airliner- we met a retired pilot who was acting as a guide in the cabin. There’s a spot in the floor that has a plexiglass cover so you can see what’s underneath, and as we walked through looking down, he made the observation that most men would give it just a cursory look, but the women would look down in puzzlement, wondering what was there. “These are our black boxes, the communications and navigation radios.” My wife, who has a month and a half of seniority on me at Rockwell Collins (38 years), responded, “Oh, I know that- I helped build them!” Made his day…
ccSS - thanks for the great photos from MOSI. I made the mistake of not allowing enough time on my last day on a Chicago vacation to fully experience MOSI. It’s on top of the list if I ever get back.
