Saw this car today it was a UP car and i think it was a type of reefer but where the ac unit was it was enclosed with a door. It looked like a vestuble area of a coach. Any idea what it is?

Didnt get one sorry

I think it was a mechanical reefer

Is this what you saw?

Balt it could be but not 100%

It looked like a home made job

Many mechanical refrigerator cars originally built in the 1960s and early 1970s were rebuilt with refrigeration devices smaller, and much more efficient, than their original diesel engines. The compartment, which had originally been covered with louvers and sliding doors, was opened up, the cooling units replaced, and the fuel supply moved to under the engines themselves instrea of under the cars. The UP is far and away the biggest operator of cars like this, under ARMN reporting marks. However, these cars are getting old and their ranks becoming very thin. Replacements are supposedly on order, though I haven’t seen them yet.
