Remodeling a model

I’m sure some of you have radically modified a previously built structure, but this is the first time for me. In March 2023 I scratch built a copy of the Whistle Stop station in the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes”. I was recently making a video of that corner of my layout, when I was struck by how large my station was, and how it overpowered the cafe.

I should have selectively compressed the station when I first built it, but I liked the unusual bi-level loading docks in the original, and there was not much else I could throw out. Now I thought….. better late than never! I decided to just shorten the length. I felt that would do it.

I think the scene is better balanced now. What do you think?

FLASH! Shaky Cam Productions has just released a new video of the Whistle Stop area. You can see it on my You Tube channel here:

Can get kinda’ scary when the saw comes out, but what sweet success. Nice trio of modeling, your station, filling station and church. Regards, Peter

Thank you Peter. The filling station is actually the Whistle Stop Cafe from the movie Fried Green Tomatoes.

You did the cafe/filling station plenty of justice. Perfect spot for a Model A or similar. Peter

Also very good and appropriate even in the 50s early 60s around here.

Don Cassler had that problem with a coal mine tipple that did not quite fit as planned on his M&K Railroad. A trip through the bandsaw fixed it.

I bet Don had some trepidation before doing that. I know I did.

I used to have a model T truck in the scene, but it was in the far corner of the layout, so I moved it to a blacksmith shop at the entrance to the layout.

We had at least four still operational well into the 21st Century in the ‘tristate area’, particularly on the various branches of Rt.9. (A couple of them are famous as ‘filming stations’ for period movies…)

There are the remains of two ‘corner’ gas-station locations in Collierville, TN – with today’s smaller cars you could even put pumps back in and use them!

As a critique, your window frames and mullions and doors look toyish but repainting them a darker color and weathering would help

I think that they look good, just a little on the colorful side.
