removing paint from box cars

I would like to remove the road numbers from 2 Intermountain PS-1 box cars.
What is the best method to accompli***his?
I don’t wnat to ruin the paint scheme.

Use a pencil erasure lightly, maybe a little solv-set to moisten it. Lightly is the operative word.
