I painted an athearn AC44 a while back and I need to strip the paint so I can start over. What is the best way to do that whithout damaging the shell?
On the Athearn shells, I’ve successfully used brake fluid without damaging the plastic body. But definately remove the clear window and headlight lens pieces.
I used PineSol with good results. I soaked my Kato AC4400 shell for about three days and used a toothbrush to scrape off the paint. No ill effect on the shell.

Ditto regarding the brake fluid, although PolyS makes a decal and paint remover that I’m told works really well. I’ve used brake fluid on both an RPP and an Athearn shell with no damage to either. I let them soak overnight, rubbed the majority of the paint off with a rag, and then used a toothbrush to get the paint out from around the detail parts.
One word of warning, the brake fluid that I used reeks to high heaven, so make sure you do this somewhere where your wife or signifcant other is not going to be bothered by it.
Best of luck,
Mike
What about the metal handrails?
